Discover Spiritual sites in the surroundings of Langres
Religion has always held an important role throughout the history of Langres. In 343, the city became the seat of a powerful bishopric, which thereafter maintained a key position throughout the middle ages. The religious patrimony of LangresKnown as one of the most beautiful cities in France, Langres lies behind 3.5 km of fortified wall. The city is indeed a splendid example of architectural heritage, harbouring many important religious monuments. In particular, you may visit the 12th century cathedral standing in the heart of the old city. Built by a former prior of Clairvaux, this magnificent structure is surrounded by several religious edifices – the cloister, the Episcopal palace, the ovens and caves of the chapter, as well as the Saint Laurent hospital. During your stroll through the city, visit the ancient ‘Oratoriens’ chapel, built in 1676 (today the “Michel Humbert” municipal theatre), the old church of Saint Amâtre (9th century – today l’Hôtel du Cheval Blanc), the ancient Jesuit school (constructed in 1630), the Annunciates convent, the old Dominican convent (built around 1775 – presently part of the hospital complex), the ancient Hospital de la Charité, the ancient Dominican convent and the “Urselines” chapel. The city of Langres is fiercely loyal to Saint Mammès, a 3rd century martyr, as well as to the Virgin Mary. In 1873, a chapel was built in honour of Our Lady after the city succumbed to Prussian rule. You may witness several statues of the Virgin along the streets of the city. The Abbeys near LangresThe Cîteaux Abbey lent a major influence to the region surrounding Langres. Several monasteries and pilgrimage sites may be discovered near the city as well as 4 abbeys, the daughters of Cîteaux, located within a distance of 30 kilometres.Notre Dame des BoisFollowing a significant faith healing Father Lamy, priest of the Langres region, set out on a yearly pilgrimage to Our Lady of Gray. During a celebration of Mass, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before him, delivering two messages:• To organize a pilgrimage to a site that Our Lady would indicate, “as there exists no such place in this region”. It is said that the Virgin Lady pointed out to him the chosen site (eventually becoming Notre Dame des Bois) on which the statue that must be placed, as well as the house that would eventually serve as the chapel. • To set up a religious following – the congregation of the Servants of Jesus and Mary. The initial vision occurred on 9th September 1909; the first congregational Mass was celebrated on 14th June 1922. Unfortunately Father Lamy never made it there, but his successors indeed created the congregation in the Ourscamp Abbey. Notre Dame des Bois may be the gathering site of a local pilgrimage, but it also serves as a national following. A pilgrimage belonging to this particular region, thanks to the initial message of the Virgin Saint to be honoured here; however, Father Lamy adamantly insisted that the Haute-Marne should not be the only region to be honoured, but France as an entire nation. He stated, “In France we have a heart, and it never forgets its mission – God never abandons His own”. A strong message sounds from Notre Dame des Bois, ringing loud and clear “Pray, Purity, Silence”. “Prière, Pureté, Silence” is inscribed on the site’s chapel. Allow yourself to be guided by the Virgin towards Jesus Christ Our Saviour. Each and every one will benefit, in accordance with one’s particular request.
